On February 8, Russian forces attacked Ukraine overnight with over 400 drones and 40 missiles. The missiles targeted Ukraine's power grid, generation plants, and substations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more than 1,000 apartments in Kyiv were without heating amid bitter cold due to the strikes. Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed two thermal power stations and electricity lines in western Ukraine were hit. Zelenskyy condemned Russia for using winter as a weapon. "Every day, Russia could choose real diplomacy, but it chooses new strikes," he said. Poland temporarily suspended operations at two airports near Ukraine's border but reopened them after no airspace violations were found. The International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Ukraine's nuclear plants lowered output because power lines were disrupted. Ukraine struck back by hitting an oil depot in Russia's Saratov region and a missile fuel plant in Tver region. Ukrainian forces also attacked Russia's Bryansk region, injuring two and cutting power in seven towns. Russia claimed its troops captured the village of Chuhunivka in eastern Ukraine's Kharkiv region. Ukrainian missiles also caused power outages at water facilities in Russia's Belgorod region. In peace talks, Zelenskyy said the US set a June deadline for an agreement to end the war. Miami may host new talks soon, with Kyiv agreeing to a US proposal for a ceasefire specifically covering energy infrastructure attacks. Zelenskyy said Kyiv is ready to halt strikes on Russian energy sites if Moscow agrees. Zelenskyy shared that Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev proposed US-Russia deals worth up to $12 trillion. However, any deal must respect Ukraine's constitution. Both Russia and Ukraine remain far apart on territorial issues. The US suggested a free economic zone in Ukraine's Donetsk region, but it is unpopular with both sides. Kyiv supports a ceasefire call during the Winter Olympic Games. Meanwhile, Russia's top military intelligence deputy General Vladimir Alexeyev survived an assassination attempt in Moscow. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov blamed Ukraine without proof, saying the attack aimed to sabotage peace talks. Separately, US President Donald Trump signed an order ending a 25 percent duty on Indian imports linked to Russia oil. The move follows a trade deal lowering US tariffs on Indian goods and asking India to stop buying Russian oil.
