Karachi will experience a daily water shortage of around 200 million gallons for at least four days. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) is starting urgent repair work on a leaking 84-inch diameter main water line. The leak was found in the Phase-I main water line at Block 19, Gulshan-i-Iqbal. Repair work begins at 12 noon on Monday and may last up to 96 hours. This pipeline is part of the important K-4 water augmentation project, which aims to improve water supply reliability. A KWSC spokesman said, "The repair work was being carried out to stabilise and strengthen the city’s water supply system ahead of Ramazan." He added, "Specialised teams would oversee the process to minimise disruption." Areas affected by the water shortage include Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Shah Faisal, Gulshan, Jinnah, Chanesar, Saddar, Lyari, and Clifton. The spokesman said water supply from the Dhabeji Pumping Station would be reduced temporarily, but supplies from other stations will continue as normal. He explained, "The city normally receives around 650 million gallons of water per day and, despite the temporary reduction, it would still receive about 450 million gallons daily." Water hydrants at Landhi and Sherpao will also be temporarily closed during the repairs. KWSC urges residents in affected areas to store water early and use it carefully during this period. Sources revealed that the pipeline has leaks in seven to eight places. A major leak was found near the KE Power House in Block 19, with another leak about 200 feet away. Additional leaks were detected where encroachments are present above the underground section of the pipe. Repairs will be done inside the main line at these locations. KWSC expects to finish the main repairs in 60 hours but has allowed up to 96 hours if needed. The utility is working fast to reduce inconvenience and ensure smooth water supply during Ramazan.
