February 8, 2026
A court has acquitted 22 people linked to a murder, loot, and arson case from the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. Additional District and Sessions Judge Kanishk Kumar made the decision on Saturday, citing lack of evidence. Government counsel Narendra Sharma said the prosecution failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) had filed charges against 26 people for incidents in Mohammadpur Raisingh village on September 8, 2013. Four accused died during the trial, leaving 22 to face proceedings. The prosecution claimed that hundreds of rioters attacked homes, looted property, and set houses on fire. Haneef, the complainant, alleged his father Rahishuddin was beaten to death during the violence. Rioters also damaged a mosque and burned a motorcycle belonging to a police constable. The acquitted accused include Anil, Subhash, Sanjeev, Karan, Sher Singh, Rishipal, Hansarpal, Pramod, Vikki, Badal, Madan, Jainarain, Brijvir, Vinod, Kala, Parveen, Jagpal, Prempal, Pappu, Nitu, Bhura, and Harender Singh, all from Mohammadpur Raisingh village. The Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013 caused over 60 deaths and displaced more than 40,000 people.
