Surajkund Fair Giant Swing Collapses: Inspector Dies, 11 Injured; Operator Booked
February 8, 2026
On February 7, 2026, a giant ‘Tsunami’ swing broke mid-air at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad. One police inspector, Jagdish Prasad, died trying to save others. Eleven others were injured. Prasad, 58, was a decorated officer set to retire soon after 36 years of service. The swing, carrying about 19 people, suddenly tilted and collapsed.
The following day, police charged Mohammad Shakir, operator of Himachal Fun Care, and his team under Section 105 for culpable homicide. Shakir runs the swing business from Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmour district.
A special investigation team led by DCP Mukesh Kumar will probe the case, checking for negligence and safety rule violations. The fair will continue, but the swing area is closed off.
ASI Sunny, who filed the complaint, said the swing owner neglected safety standards, causing the tragedy. Haryana DGP Ajay Singhal announced Rs 1 crore compensation and a government job to an inspector’s family member. He praised Prasad’s bravery and declared him a martyr.
Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma said the injured are stable. An administrative committee will further investigate. Prasad is survived by his wife Sudha and three children. His family and village in Mathura are shocked.
This is the third giant swing accident at the Surajkund fair. Past incidents in 2002 and 2019 led to temporary suspension of swings. Despite strict safety checks, fatal accidents continue, raising serious safety concerns.
