The Washington Post cut more than 300 journalists on Wednesday morning. The layoffs included the entire sports desk. This follows a company email telling staff to "stay home" and join a Zoom call about "significant actions." The cuts affected nearly one-third of the newsroom, just before big events like the Winter Olympics and Super Bowl LX. Executive Editor Matt Murray called the layoffs "painful" and said the newspaper is "too rooted in a different era." In response, the Washington Post Guild started a GoFundMe to help the laid-off journalists. Economics reporter Rachel Siegel and Guild members run the fundraiser. It has raised over $500,000 from more than 4,600 donors, surpassing its target. Funds will cover "moving costs, visa expenses, childcare, healthcare, meals and more," the campaign page states. Siegel said the group was "bowled over" by the support on "an incredibly hard day." The Guild posted on X that it "vehemently opposes" the layoffs. They called on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who owns the Post, to step down if he no longer supports the paper's mission. The GoFundMe sparked online debate. One user said, "This mess falls squarely on @JeffBezos shoulders to get the people HIS newspaper fired home safely." Another called the situation "unprofessional" and "dishonourable." Another user noted, "In America, your laid off coworkers fundraise money to get you out of a war zone that your billionaire boss left you stranded in." The fundraiser will stay open for several days as donations continue to flow in.
