Cardinal Poola Anthony Elected CBCI President; New Office Bearers Announced

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) elected new leaders on February 7. Cardinal Poola Anthony, Archbishop of Hyderabad, is the new President. Thomas Mar Koorilos, Archbishop of Tiruvalla, became vice president–first, and Mathew Moolakkatt, Archbishop of Kottayam, was chosen as vice president–second. Anil Couto was re-elected as secretary general. These leaders will serve a term of two years.
The new office bearers show the Church’s liturgical diversity. Cardinal Poola Anthony and Archbishop Anil Couto belong to the Latin Rite. Archbishop Thomas Mar Koorilos is from the Syro-Malankara Rite. Archbishop Mathew Moolakkatt belongs to the Syro-Malabar Rite.
The outgoing leaders were Mar Andrews Thazhath (President), George Anthonysamy (Vice President–First), and Joseph Mar Thomas (Vice President–Second).
