New York City Faces Extreme Cold Colder Than Antarctica Amid Fierce Arctic Winds
February 9, 2026
New York City recorded temperatures colder than parts of Antarctica on Sunday. The mercury reached 3 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chills dragging the real feel to 14 degrees below zero. In the Northeast, wind chills plunged to a staggering 40 degrees below zero, reported the New York Post.
The National Weather Service issued Rare Extreme Cold Warnings for over 43 million people, including New York and Philadelphia, through Sunday night. "The last time [New York City] had a warning issued similar to what we have this morning was in 2004," said FOX Weather Meteorologist Stephen Morgan.
By contrast, Antarctica's McMurdo Station was a balmy 21 degrees, 18 degrees warmer than New York City. This icy blast comes from Arctic air heading south from north of Hudson Bay, Canada.
Dan DePodwin, Senior Director of Forecasting Operations at AccuWeather, stated, "In many parts of the Northeast away from the coast, this prolonged stretch of cold is the most extreme in at least the last decade and, in some areas, the last two decades." Many areas will experience one of the top 10 longest streaks below freezing on record.
AccuWeather's Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter added, "The deep freeze is returning to the northeastern United States this weekend. The combination of Arctic air and gusty winds could make it feel colder than any other point so far this winter for many in the region."
So far this year, at least 17 people have died outside in New York City, with 13 confirmed deaths from hypothermia. Despite this, Mayor Mamdani has not forced homeless people off the streets into shelters.
Other cities like Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Boston opened warming shelters. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu issued a cold weather emergency lasting through Monday.
The brutal cold snap marks the worst freeze in over two decades for the region.
