On Monday, February 9, 2026, a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant heard pleas including one from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The pleas relate to the ongoing Special Summary Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal. Earlier, on February 4, the Court issued notices and asked for replies from the Election Commission and West Bengal’s chief electoral officer by February 9. Mamata Banerjee became the first sitting Chief Minister to argue in the Supreme Court. She urged the Court to intervene in the SIR process to “save democracy,” claiming that West Bengal and its people were being unfairly targeted. On January 19, the Court had directed that the SIR process must be transparent and must not cause inconvenience to anyone. The West Bengal government has also told the Election Commission it is ready to provide 8,505 Group B officers to support the SIR exercise.
