Thousands of people in Sompeta, Vajrapukotturu, and nearby areas are losing sleep due to bears moving close to their homes. Despite fences around cashew, mango, and coconut groves, bears enter these farms looking for food. One bear caught in a fence was sent to Visakhapatnam Zoological Park for treatment on Sunday. The Forest Department reported that three to four bears have been seen in Batu Puram, Rajam, Akkupalli, Metturu, and other places recently. Farmers fear going to their farms because of possible bear attacks. In March 2023, a bear killed Ch. Lokanatham and A. Kurma Rao, and injured several others. After this, villagers stopped visiting the fruit groves in the Uddanam region. Officials say the bears come from nearby Odisha because Uddanam has plenty of food and water. Forest officers Nagendra and K. Naidu have asked locals to be very careful when moving in paddy fields and groves for the next three days. Locals want all bears caught to protect themselves from attacks.
