Massacre in Nigeria’s Woro Leaves 200 Dead, Many Women and Children Kidnapped
February 9, 2026
In Woro, a town in Nigeria’s Kwara State, a brutal attack by armed men left about 200 people dead. The night of the massacre saw homes and shops burn as gunmen stormed the village. Residents believe the attackers are linked to ISIL and targeted the Muslim-majority community after rejection of their preaching demands. Many women and children were kidnapped during the attack, and their fate remains unknown.
Survivors described desperate escapes across smoky streets scattered with ruins and unburied bodies. Woro, once home to around 17,000 people, now has fewer than 200 left. The mosque, once crowded on Fridays, is nearly empty, with the community mourning deeply as they gather for prayers and funerals.
Military forces, led by Brigadier General Nicholas Rume, have been deployed to secure the area. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called the massacre senseless and demanded justice.
Villagers have buried 120 victims in a single grave due to limited resources. Both Muslims and Christians lost loved ones. Despite repeated attempts, attackers failed to re-enter Woro again, resorting to explosive devices on the village’s outskirts.
Woro remains shattered and silent. Residents face uncertain days ahead, hoping for safety and the strength to rebuild their destroyed homes and lives.
