Australia’s Communications Minister Anika Wells is alarmed by reports that children on Roblox are exposed to harmful content and grooming. She has asked the gaming platform to explain how it handles sexual and self-harm material. Wells also called for the Australian Classification Board to review Roblox’s PG rating. The eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, has written to Roblox too. She said, "We remain highly concerned by ongoing reports regarding the exploitation of children on the Roblox service, and exposure to harmful material.” eSafety plans to test if Roblox is keeping its promises, like disabling chat features and making accounts private for underage users. Concerns rose after a Guardian Australia report showed a week of virtual sexual harassment and violence on Roblox. An undercover reporter playing as an eight-year-old girl faced sexualised avatars, cyberbullying, assault, and more—even with parental controls active. While social media sites like Instagram and Snapchat face bans for under-16s in Australia, games like Roblox have not. Wells and her department are exploring ways to regulate these platforms better. In a letter to Roblox, Wells wrote she was “alarmed by reports of children being exposed to graphic and gratuitous user-generated content on the platform, including sexually explicit and suicidal material.” She added, "Even more disturbing are ongoing reports and concerns about children being approached and groomed by predators, who actively seek to exploit their curiosity and innocence.” The minister pointed to reports that children access adult-only spaces containing explicit content and referenced charges against a Queensland man accused of grooming kids on Roblox and other platforms. Wells asked for urgent talks and short-term safety measures from Roblox. She also wants the eSafety Commissioner’s advice and asked the Classification Board if the PG rating still fits. Despite Roblox working with the eSafety Commissioner on child safety, Wells said: “This is untenable, and these issues are of deep concern to many Australians parents and carers.” Julie Inman Grant welcomed government support, saying, “I welcome the Minister for Communications’ correspondence and the Australian Government’s support on this important issue, as we use all of the tools available to us to keep Australian kids safe online.” The eSafety office said it may take further steps under Australia’s Online Safety Act after testing Roblox’s compliance.
