Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim spoke out against vigilantism on Monday after police detained 19 people, including a controversial preacher, ahead of a banned rally. The “Anti-Illegal Houses of Worship” rally was planned near Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, close to the Sogo shopping complex, for around 8pm on Saturday. Police stopped the protest citing security reasons after receiving 131 complaints against it. Speaking at the Ministry of National Unity’s monthly meeting, Anwar described the issue as a challenge to social harmony. He urged civil servants and all Malaysians to protect stability, especially when political tensions run high. "In this monthly meeting, I want to stress the core issue of national unity," he said. Adding to this, he warned that economic growth alone "would not ensure well-being if conflict continues."
