India to Keep Multiple Energy Sources for Reliable Supply, Says Vikram Misri
February 9, 2026
India plans to keep many energy supply sources and change them if needed. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said this on Monday. He spoke after a question about India buying Russian oil. US President Donald Trump said last week that India had "committed to stop directly or indirectly" importing Russian oil.
Misri said, "India’s priority is to safeguard the interests of its consumers through an energy policy driven by adequate availability, fair pricing, and reliability of supply." He added India does not depend on any one source for crude oil and does not want to be dependent. India imports from a mix of sources based on market conditions. Misri said India's government and energy companies are guided by "national interests."
Last week, Trump lifted a 25% tariff on all imports from India. The tariff was because of India buying Russian oil. The Kremlin said it saw nothing new in India’s plan to diversify energy sources. According to Reuters, India's Russian oil imports dropped in January as refiners bought more alternatives due to Western sanctions and US-India trade talks.
