NHAI Opens New Elevated Corridor on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway to Ease Traffic in Ranipet
February 9, 2026
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) opened a new elevated corridor on Monday above the ₹22-crore vehicular underpass on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH48) at Ranipet. This corridor will ease traffic congestion on the service lanes and help prevent accidents, especially during the night. "For now, ambulances and government buses are allowed to use the elevated corridor. Lighting work on the median and installation of reflectors and signages would be carried out in the coming weeks," an NHAI official told The Hindu. Motorists raised concerns about low visibility due to dust from the corridor at night. V. Mohan, a motorist, said, "The NHAI should install streetlights on the elevated corridor immediately to prevent accidents, as a large number of vehicles are using the facility. Railings should be installed on both sides of the ramp to prevent vehicles from cutting into the service lane from the corridor." The underpass beneath the corridor stands 4.5 metres high and 20 metres wide, suitable for two-wheelers, cars, and buses. This setup aims to cut down the number of U-turns and minimize accidents on this busy stretch. This area also has government schools, primary health centres, and car service centres. Local residents believe the new corridor will help students, office workers, farmers, and vehicles such as school vans and ambulances cross the area safely.
