Supreme Court Bans Micro Observers' Powers in Bengal Electoral Roll Revision, TMC Cheers Big Win
February 10, 2026
On February 9, 2026, the Trinamool Congress welcomed the Supreme Court’s intervention in West Bengal’s electoral roll revision. The court ruled that micro observers appointed by the Election Commission of India cannot make decisions. Instead, Group B officers must support the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who appeared in court on February 4, highlighted that micro observers were only used in West Bengal. The court also extended the deadline for claims and objections in the SIR process by one week beyond February 14.
The Trinamool Congress shared on social media that “The Hon’ble Supreme Court has delivered a stinging rebuke to @ECISVEEP’s arbitrary overreach. In unequivocal terms, the Court has ordered that micro-observers can only assist EROs/AEROs and that final authority rests solely with EROs. Further, the Court has directed that 8,505 Bengal officials be tagged to EROs to support the SIR process.”
The party called this move a blow to the Election Commission's exclusive use of micro observers in Bengal, claiming it aimed to “influence, intimidate, and manipulate the process.” They called it “Constitutional vandalism” now struck down by the highest court. The SIR exercise is near completion, and the Chief Electoral Officer had sought a seven-day extension earlier. The Trinamool Congress opposes SIR, calling it a strategy to remove genuine voters. Their statement read, “This is a big victory for democracy. A big victory for Bengal. And a big defeat for those who thought institutions could be weaponised against the people.”
Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, said the TMC's efforts to remove micro observers have been proven desperate. He noted that the responsibility for voter list accuracy now lies with AEROs and EROs. He added, “As a party and as individual voters, we also have the full right to challenge this after the final voter list is published.”
The BJP demands a clean electoral roll and insists SIR be done properly before the Assembly polls due soon. In December, about 58 lakh voters were removed from the draft roll for reasons like death or address change. Over 1.36 crore voters faced 'logical discrepancy' notices to appear for hearings.
