Texas Housewarming Video with Cows Sparks mixed Reactions over Indian Traditions
February 10, 2026
A video of two cows walking inside a new house during a housewarming ceremony in Texas has caught wide attention. The video was shared on the Facebook page of Texas Gaushala in January. The post said, "Family welcoming Gau Mata (Mother cow) from Texas Gaushala on the auspicious occasion of their house-warming (Griha Pravesh) ceremony. The sacred presence of Gau Mata during house-warming invites prosperity, protection, and divine blessings into the new home." However, some social media users in Texas criticized the practice. An X handle posted, "When the house is brand new but the mindset is prehistoric. Welcome to Texas: Buy a brand-new million dollar house in a Dallas suburb, then let cows wander across the marble floors like it’s a barn. Zero intention of integrating." This post went viral amid a tense atmosphere in Texas regarding Indian culture. Many pointed out that the owners can celebrate their housewarming as they wish. Others preferred this over an alcohol party. One user wrote, "Strange world we live in: A house-warming with alcohol is called 'modern,' but welcoming a sacred living being - the symbol of life and sustenance - is called 'prehistoric.'" Another user raised legal concerns about livestock rules, saying, "This is likely in a residential area. Not zoned for agriculture, which is what is required to have livestock on property. Why do we allow these newcomers to flaunt all of our laws?" The debate comes amid growing anti-India sentiments in Texas. Governor Greg Abbott recently froze H-1B hiring in state agencies and universities. Texas is also investigating three Indian firms about H-1B employee details. This incident highlights cultural and legal challenges faced by Indian communities in Texas.
