UK Schools Ban Skirts to Boost Inclusivity and Cut Uniform Hassles
February 10, 2026
Schools in the UK are banning skirts as part of their uniforms. Teachers spend too much time checking skirt lengths, and some people complain skirts are too short. This month, Brynteg School in South Wales announced it will ban skirts starting September. The school said a simpler uniform "reduces pressure on families, removes unnecessary distinctions and ensures every pupil can feel comfortable and confident." Walbottle Academy also supports trousers for promoting inclusivity, equality, comfort, and learning. In fact, Newhouse Academy and Dixons Newall Green Academy banned skirts back in September 2025. However, The Warriner School reversed the ban after families protested. Elizabeth Gray from Your School Uniform told the BBC some parents want students to keep uniform choices. A new UK law limits branded uniform items to three plus a tie. This pushes schools towards trousers-only policies. Some schools add logos to skirt waistbands to stop rolling and shortening. Gray said schools spend too long watching skirt lengths and handling related fairness issues. Helen Burton from Junipers Uniform explained some schools now let girls wear trousers without banning skirts. She added many schools are unhappy about the new law. Two schools working with her's supplier plan to drop day uniforms and switch to PE kits. One school said many students already wear PE kits 3 days a week. Experts have mixed views. The Times reported primary schools using PE-style kits saw better results in grades, well-being, and attendance. But Dr Madeleine Pownall from Leeds University said banning skirts wrongly blames girls for objectification. She wants uniform standards to be practical and for everyone to learn respect and consent. Some parents agreed and said banning skirts ignores girls' rights to show femininity. One mother told The Telegraph a gradual approach would be better since uniforms are costly and throwing them away wastes money.
