President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge that connects the US and Canada. He demands that the US must be "fully compensated for everything" it has given Canada. Trump wrote on social media that the bridge will not open until Ottawa "treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve." The bridge links Ontario and Michigan, spanning the Detroit River, and is expected to open to traffic in early 2026 after final tests and approvals. Construction began in 2018, with a total cost estimated at $6.4 billion CAD. The project is funded by Canada but will be publicly owned by both countries. Trump insisted the US should own "at least one half of this asset" and claimed Canada owns both sides. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, developing the bridge, is fully owned by Canada. Trump said, "The Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just 'take advantage of America!'" He added, "I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them." Trump also referenced recent trade tensions, criticizing Canadian tariffs on US dairy products as "unacceptable". He warned that Canada's new trade deal with China will "eat Canada alive" and jokingly claimed China will "terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup." The bridge has been controversial, with the American Moroun family—owners of the nearby Ambassador Bridge—previously urging Trump to stop construction over toll concerns. Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously called the bridge a "vital economic link." Authorities in Canada and Detroit have not yet responded to requests for comment.
