Sindh Govt to Release 300 PTI Workers Detained Under MPO Ordinance
February 10, 2026
KARACHI: The Sindh government decided on Monday to release nearly 300 Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) workers detained last week under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance. PTI spokesperson Fauzia Siddiqui said Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar informed PTI lawmakers Wajid Hussain and Sajjad Ali Soomro about the decision. "So we hope that our workers will be released by tomorrow [Tuesday] after all government formalities are completed," she told Dawn. The party claimed that around 300 workers and leaders were arrested in raids starting last Sunday ahead of the Feb 8 protest call. "We have already challenged their detention in court," Siddiqui added. Government sources confirmed the release plan and said the "documentary process" had started. A source said, "It may take some time, and by Tuesday evening we may see the workers being released from prison." Last week, PTI accused the Sindh authorities of arresting dozens of activists in night raids across Karachi and other Sindh regions under MPO orders issued on Feb 1. The Sindh home department stated the detentions were for preventing public disruptions like roadblocks or sit-ins. PTI challenged the detentions in the Sindh High Court (SHC) the next day. On Friday, the SHC asked for provincial cabinet decisions supporting the MPO detentions and fixed Feb 10 for hearing on about 35 petitions. Meanwhile, even after the Feb 8 protest call, PTI Karachi President Raja Azhar and Senior Vice President Faheem Khan were arrested and moved to Central Prison. The party said their families have no information on the cases or their location. Siddiqui called this "open barbarity," condemning the arrests as unconstitutional and politically driven.
