Pakistan Senate Panels Push for Swift Road Projects and Tackle $40m Karachi Port Corruption
February 10, 2026
ISLAMABAD: On Monday, Pakistan’s Senate committees raised urgent concerns over delays in road infrastructure projects and corruption at Karachi Port Trust (KPT). The Senate Standing Committee on Communications, led by Pervaiz Rashid, urged that road projects should be done one at a time. This will stop delays and cost rises. The committee asked the Planning Commission for help in making a clear plan. Chairman Pervaiz Rashid said those who delay projects must be held responsible and pay for any extra costs.
The committee highlighted the Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway as a key project and demanded regular progress reports. They also discussed unsafe roads and problems with motorways and the Lowari Tunnel, focusing on safety and ventilation standards. Updates on roads like Chakdara-Chitral and Gilgit-Shandur were reviewed. The committee stressed quick action on the Escalation Price Adjustment Formula to avoid further financial claims from contractors.
Meanwhile, the Senate Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs, chaired by Senator Faisal Vawda, revealed alarming corruption at KPT. Annual corruption linked to container clearance is estimated at $40 million. Senator Vawda said about 239 containers are delayed due to customs issues at Karachi International Container Terminal, with bribes of Rs112,000 per container reported. The committee ordered KICT to clear the backlog and stop corruption.
Concerns were also raised about land mismanagement at Korangi Fisheries Harbour. Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar admitted not all problems can be fixed instantly but assured a step-by-step approach.
These discussions underline the government’s push for cleaner ports and faster, safer roads to boost Pakistan’s infrastructure and economy.
