Inquiry Commission Seeks Evidence on Water Contamination Deaths in Indore
February 10, 2026
An inquiry commission has been set up to investigate deaths caused by a diarrhoea outbreak from contaminated government water in Indore's Bhagirathpura area. The panel is led by former Madhya Pradesh High Court judge Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta. "As per the order of the Hon’ble Madhya Pradesh High Court, an Inquiry Commission has been constituted under the chairmanship of Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta, former Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, to investigate the drinking water contamination in the Bhagirathpura area of Indore and its resulting impact on public health and other affected areas," said an official release. The commission will look into causes of the water pollution, administrative negligence, responsible persons' actions, death toll, medical impacts, and corrective steps. The commission has issued a public notice asking all people with information, including affected citizens, family members, doctors, hospitals, government officials, and social groups, to submit evidence by February 28. "The Commission requests any person having information or evidence such as complaints, medical records, death certificates, photos or videos of leaks or sewage mixing, tender documents, inspection reports, or any other relevant material to submit these to its office by February 28," the release stated. The outbreak was first noticed on December 29 last year. Over 3,000 people have been affected so far. While government doctors' audit report puts the death toll at 15, local sources say at least 33 have died in this tragedy.
