The Sindh government on Tuesday officially notified a single-member commission to investigate the deadly Gul Plaza inferno. Justice Agha Faisal, nominated by the Sindh High Court (SHC), will lead the inquiry. The notification, first issued on February 4, was published in the provincial Gazette today. "The Commission of Inquiry will complete the inquiry within eight (08) weeks," the notification said. Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi’s office will provide secretariat support. The fire destroyed over 1,100 shops and took nearly two days to extinguish. The commission will check if Gul Plaza's construction violated approved building plans, making evacuation difficult. It will also examine whether approvals and lease extensions by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) followed proper laws and rules. The Sindh government had earlier said it would seek a judicial inquiry from the SHC chief justice. More updates to follow.
