Teenager to be Sentenced Today for Random Murder of 12-Year-Old Leo Ross in Birmingham
February 10, 2026
A teenage boy who killed 12-year-old Leo Ross in Birmingham last year will be sentenced today at Birmingham Crown Court. On 29 January 2026, the 15-year-old admitted murdering Leo by stabbing him in the stomach during a random attack in parkland. Leo was on his way home from Christ Church School when he was attacked on 21 January 2025. The attacker, aged 14 at the time, also admitted two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm related to earlier attacks. He had a bladed weapon on the day he killed Leo. He denied two other assault charges, which were ordered to lie on file. Police found the murder weapon was thrown into a nearby river. The boy, seen riding a bike, had attacked several women in local parkland before. West Midlands Police revealed that the killer waited at the scene and falsely claimed he found Leo fatally injured by the River Cole. Leo had no connection to the attacker. Senior officers said the stabbing was random and unprovoked. Justice Choudhury KC will hear the sentencing today. Leo was found stabbed around 3:40pm and died in hospital around 7:30pm. Police described the scene as “chaotic and absolutely traumatic.” Leo’s foster family called him "the sweetest, kindest boy" whose life was cut short by a senseless act. His birth mother said, "My baby’s life was stolen for no reason whatsoever. My life will never be the same again without him."
