Dubai Uses AI and New Roads to Cut Traffic Jams, Boost Future Mobility
February 10, 2026
Dubai is fighting traffic jams head-on as its population and vehicles grow fast. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started big upgrades to roads and smart traffic control to shorten travel times and improve safety. Vehicle numbers rise by about 10% each year, causing heavy congestion especially on key roads like Sheikh Zayed and Ras Al Khor.
To smooth traffic, Dubai rolled out the AI-powered UTC-UX Fusion traffic signal system in 2025. It adjusts lights in real time using digital twins, improving flow by up to 37% and cutting travel times by 10% to 20%. This system will cover hundreds of junctions by 2026.
Dubai also set up the AI Traffic Lab that predicts congestion early. These tech steps help manage road use around prime hours, construction, and events.
Physical upgrades include a new exit at Bu Kadra that halved peak travel times and a bridge on Al Qudra Road boosting capacity by nearly 200%. The Dubai Healthcare City exit was upgraded to double vehicle capacity. Over 50 locations saw lane expansions and junction fixes last year, some cutting travel by up to 60%.
School zones got attention too, with reconfigured entrances, bigger parking, and safety upgrades reducing congestion by 25% to 40%. In 2026, the RTA plans a school bus pooling pilot with private partners to ease peak traffic further.
Looking forward, Dubai is testing driverless pods linking metro stops, running autonomous RT6 taxis, and nearing completion of an air taxi program to beat surface jams. The ambitious Dubai Loop project began in 2026, building a 6-km underground transport tunnel, part of a 24-km network to speed travel beneath the city.
Dubai also promotes ride-hailing and shared mobility to cut private car use and emissions. Strengthening connections between metro, tram, buses, pods, and e-hail options helps shift commuters away from cars.
The RTA’s comprehensive plan combines smart AI, major road works, safer school zones, and futuristic transport tech. This multi-pronged approach aims to build a cleaner, more efficient, and innovative transport system that benefits residents, workers, and visitors alike.
