Principal N.V. Sundarachary of Guntur Medical College (GMC) has driven a ₹10 crore overhaul of the college's old infrastructure in the last year. Alumni and individual donors, including the GMC Alumni of North America (GMCANA), contributed generously. Buildings 60 to 100 years old have been fixed up, along with classrooms, labs, transport, hostels, and basic facilities. At the college-wide level, works worth about ₹2.47 crore were done. Two buses costing ₹40 lakh each were bought by 1999-batch alumni. The canteen was renovated for ₹41 lakh. Other upgrades included waterproofing and roofing of the main building, new gates, internal roads, library roofing, dining rooms, exam tables, water coolers, RO plants, landscaping, and green carpeting. Department-wise development exceeded ₹5.04 crore. The Anatomy Department received ₹74.5 lakh to renew galleries, reading rooms, and teaching spaces, funded by the 1984 and 1999 batches and donors. Biochemistry and Physiology departments got extensive lab renovations, new equipment, and iron roof replacements with donations over ₹1.4 crore. Pathology upgrades worth ₹70 lakh included lab renewal, microscopes, smart boards, and lecture galleries, mainly funded by the 1997 batch and donors from India and abroad. Clinical departments benefitted from new teaching tools and medical equipment. Hostels received ₹14.8 lakh for adding recreational spots, sports facilities, and renovating common areas. College officials said the alumni-led funding model ensured transparent use of funds and preserved heritage buildings. Dr. Sundarachary told The Hindu, "The large-scale renovation has significantly improved the academic environment and student facilities at GMC, strengthening its standing as one of Andhra Pradesh’s premier medical institutions."
