The Thiruvananthapuram City police carried out a strict enforcement drive against banned tobacco use and sales on Monday. The focus was on areas near schools, colleges, and public places. District Police Chief K. Karthick led the efforts, with police subdivisions checking their zones. In total, 231 shops and 105 educational institution vicinities were inspected. Authorities took action against 187 individuals under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and imposed fines. They also registered 50 cases under COTPA and seven more cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Mr. Karthick said, "Similar inspections will continue in the coming days as part of sustained efforts to curb tobacco use and illegal sales, particularly in areas surrounding school and college premises."
