Hong Kong investors are rethinking their investments in Panama after a dispute over ports operated by CK Hutchison’s subsidiary, the city’s leader John Lee Ka-chiu said. The Supreme Court of Panama ruled that the contract allowing Panama Ports Company, owned by CK Hutchison, to run Balboa and Cristobal terminals is unconstitutional. Lee urged Panama to give "fair and reasonable" treatment to Hong Kong firms and promised to work with Beijing to protect their rights. Earlier, commerce minister Algernon Yau called out Panama’s envoy in Hong Kong to condemn the court decision and demand respect for the contract. Yau stressed the importance of fair business conditions and protecting the legal rights of Hong Kong companies. CK Hutchison’s parent company is led by billionaire Li Ka-shing.
