Supermarkets Charge Nearly Double for Small Fruits Using Confusing Per-Unit Pricing
February 11, 2026
If you buy small “kids’ bananas” at Woolworths, you might pay almost double the price per kilogram compared to larger bananas. For example, a bunch of five kids’ bananas costs $3.70 but weighs only 530g. This means the price per kilo is $6.98 — 99% more than the $3.50/kg for loose cavendish bananas. A customer also tested cucumbers at Woolworths. Lebanese cucumbers were $4.90/kg, while larger continental cucumbers were $2.50 each. The continental variety cost $7.35 per kilo, 50% more than Lebanese. Woolworths said pricing is “clearly communicated” to help shoppers. Across Australia, Woolworths, Coles, and Aldi are shifting to per-item prices, often without showing per-kilogram rates. At one Coles store, more than half the fresh produce was priced per piece, mixing units randomly. Examples include cauliflowers at $5 each, broccoli at $8/kg, and many fruits and vegetables sold per unit without weight or per-kilo prices. Coles claims this helps customers shop easily, balancing transparency with simplicity. Aldi also uses this system. They sell rock melons at $4.99 each next to watermelons priced per kilo. Lemons are sold both loose and in bags, with varying per-item prices. There are no weighing scales in Aldi, making price comparison tough. Online, Coles and Aldi show average weights and vary final prices by actual weight. Woolworths sells fresh produce online at fixed per-item prices, ignoring weight differences. A local greengrocer expert called this confusing and unfair to customers, saying technology exists to price accurately by weight. Woolworths says it is exploring better online pricing methods. Consumer groups urge supermarkets to clearly show and charge per kilogram prices to help buyers. The assistant competition minister did not confirm support for this but highlighted plans to improve pricing transparency. No new rules on per-unit pricing have been announced yet.
