Trump Admin Removes Rainbow Flag From Stonewall Monument, Sparking Outrage
February 11, 2026
The Trump administration has taken down the large rainbow Pride flag from the Stonewall National Monument in New York. This monument marks the birthplace of the modern US gay rights movement. The National Park Service said the flag removal followed a policy to treat all federal sites the same. However, many New York officials see this as an attack on LGBTQ rights. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called it an "act of erasure." Some leaders, including Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, vow to raise a new Pride flag on the empty flagpole this week. The Park Service explained that only flags representing official federal views or historical context are allowed. The monument honors the 1969 Stonewall uprising where the LGBTQ community protested police raids. It became a US national monument in 2016 under President Barack Obama. Critics say the Trump administration is limiting queer rights, citing changes like removing "T" for transgender on the Stonewall monument’s website. The flag was removed late Sunday or early Monday. Hoylman-Sigal called this a "deliberate attack on the LGBTQ community" and hinted that raising a new flag might risk arrests. He said, "The movement was founded on rebellion against authorities." The National Park Service has not said how it will respond if a new Pride flag goes up.
