Malaysian Airports Criticized for High Food and Goods Prices, Minister Calls for Review
February 11, 2026
Malaysia Airports are facing complaints about expensive food and goods. Tourism Minister Tiong King Sing said items like chocolates, food, and alcohol at airport shops cost more than outside. "Visitors at the airport have mentioned that items sold at duty-free shops are expensive and that it is cheaper to buy from outside," he said at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 on Tuesday. The high prices can hurt the retail business and be tough on big families travelling together. The minister said he spoke with shop operators who believe that lowering rental rates could help reduce food prices. "Outlet operators don’t have to depend only on high prices to make money. Instead, they could lower prices a little and sell more items," he added. "Even with smaller profit per item, the higher sales volume could still give them good overall profit." Tiong also hopes Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will add more shops offering local food for the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign. "It is important for Malaysia Airports to promote local food offerings, including those from various regions and states, as food remains one of the main attractions for travellers," he said. He stressed that airports give visitors their first impression of Malaysia and that cleanliness must be maintained. Meanwhile, the new ShopLAH campaign aims to turn airport visits into fuller experiences. MAHB will launch a tourist privilege card in March. This digital card offers travellers exclusive discounts, treats, and special duty-free bags at selected outlets through the MYAirports app.
