BJP Legislators Stage Sit-In in J&K Assembly Demanding CM Omar Abdullah’s Apology
February 11, 2026
On February 11, 2026, BJP legislators held a sit-in protest in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. They demanded an apology from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his "unparliamentary remarks" against them. Earlier, BJP members returned to the House after a walkout during Question Hour but quickly gathered in the first row, chanting slogans against the government and seeking the CM’s apology.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather reminded them that they could not reopen the issue after walking out. The BJP claimed the Chief Minister left the House upon seeing them enter. The Speaker refused to record the BJP protest and continued the session. Later, BJP members gathered in the well of the Assembly to stage the sit-in.
The day’s Question Hour had noisy scenes lasting over 30 minutes. BJP legislator Sham Lal Sharma demanded that either the Chief Minister apologise or the Speaker make a statement in his absence. He stated, "Such an incident has no precedent. The language used by the chief minister, the Leader of the House, is not a language that can be used in any Parliament..."
Speaker Rather urged BJP to let the Question Hour continue and said, "Whatever happened yesterday (Tuesday) was unfortunate. Let the chief minister come, and if he wishes, he can make a statement. I can't make a statement on his behalf."
Health Minister Sakeena Itoo accused BJP members of also using unparliamentary words, especially against Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary. Mr. Choudhary proposed that the Chair review all unparliamentary language and remove it to avoid disruptions. BJP Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma opposed this and led a walkout, chanting slogans against the government.
Tensions began on February 10 during CM Omar Abdullah’s budget speech. BJP members objected to some of his remarks and demanded an apology. The CM refused to apologise but said he was willing to withdraw his words. Mr. Sharma declared the party would block House proceedings until the CM gave an unconditional apology on the floor.
