French Wine and Spirit Exports Fall Sharply in China and US in 2025 Amid Tariffs
February 11, 2026
French wine and spirit exports to mainland China and the United States fell by 19.5% and 21% respectively in 2025. Tariffs from both countries are to blame, hurting global trade and sales. Gabriel Picard, president of the French Federation of Wine and Spirit Exporters (FEVS), said, “It’s weighing on everyone’s morale.” He shared the news during a press conference in Paris on Tuesday, presenting annual figures that showed a third straight year of export decline. This marked the lowest export values since 2020. Picard said a rebound this year looks difficult. The 15% tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on French wine and spirits, along with similar duties from China in response to EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, dragged down exports. The US remains the largest market for French wine and spirits, worth €3 billion, but Trump’s tariffs and a strong euro caused a 21.2% drop in exports there last year.
