Bangladeshi Migrant Wins UK Asylum Over False Political Prison Threat
February 13, 2026
A Bangladeshi migrant known as MM has won the right to remain in Britain after the Upper Tribunal ruled he cannot be deported. The court found that returning to Bangladesh would risk him facing a 20-year prison sentence on explosives charges. MM argued these charges were false and politically motivated by the former Awami League government. He claimed this was due to his links to an opposing political group. MM described himself as a “political leader” of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. He was convicted in absentia in 2015 while in Cyprus and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Court documents proving this were verified as genuine. Seven other men received the same sentence. Judge Madeleine Reeds explained the real risk MM faces if deported, citing genuine court documents tied to politically motivated charges. The Home Office said MM could return safely, arguing the Awami League had been removed from power in August 2024 after nationwide protests and unrest. However, the judge noted that the Awami League still has supporters within the government and police. Reports show Bangladesh remains politically unstable, with some innocent people detained during the review of politically motivated cases. The tribunal concluded MM would likely be held without bail on false charges. Thus, MM’s appeal was allowed, securing his continued stay in the UK.
