Eight people were killed in two shootings in Tumbler Ridge, a town in British Columbia, Canada. The shootings happened at a school and a home. Twenty-seven people were injured. The town has about 3,000 people, so many know someone affected. The mother of the 18-year-old suspect, Jennifer Jacobs (also known as Jennifer Strang), 39, was found dead at a home along with Emmett Jacobs, the suspect's 11-year-old step-brother. Police said Jesse Van Rootselaar, the suspect, died by suicide at the scene. At Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, four students were killed: 12-year-old Kylie Smith, described by her family as "the light in our family" and a talented artist; 12-year-old Abel Mwansa, remembered for his smile and love of science and soccer; 12-year-old Zoey Benoit, called "resilient, vibrant, smart, caring" by her family; and students Ticaria Lampert, 12, and Ezekiel Schofield, 13. Also killed at the school was 39-year-old educator Shannda Aviugana-Durand. The BC General Employees Union mourned her loss and expressed condolences. Among the injured is 12-year-old Maya Gebala who was seriously hurt and flown to a Vancouver hospital. Her family asked for prayers, describing her as outgoing and a sports lover.
