Trump Administration Revokes Key Climate Change Finding, Undoing Emission Rules
February 13, 2026
The Trump administration announced a major rollback of climate change rules by rescinding the 2009 “endangerment finding.” This finding, made under President Obama, declared that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide threaten public health and justified regulations to cut emissions. President Trump called the finding “one of the greatest scams in history” and repealed it on Thursday at a White House event. Trump said, “over the generations, fossil fuels have saved millions of lives and lifted billions of people out of poverty all over the world.” EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin called the finding “the Holy Grail of federal regulatory overreach.” Rescinding it cancels emission standards for cars and trucks and could affect rules on power plants and oil and gas facilities. Environmental experts warn it will cause “more havoc” than prior rollbacks and expect court challenges. Environmental groups called this the largest attack on federal climate authority ever, saying scientific evidence supporting the finding has grown stronger. The EPA also ended tax credits for car features that reduce emissions, which Zeldin criticized. Democrats and environmentalists condemned the move. Former EPA head Gina McCarthy said the agency now favors fossil fuel interests over public health while Senator Ed Markey accused Trump and Zeldin of risking lives by removing protections. The rollback follows an order from Trump asking the EPA to review the finding’s legality. Conservatives argue the rules hurt the economy, while critics warn the changes harm efforts against climate change and related disasters.
