Donald Trump’s Board of Peace (BoP) is set to hold a meeting in Washington next week. Pakistan and other Muslim countries are expected to attend. The meeting will focus on the Gaza situation and review the BoP’s mandate and structure. However, many fear the meeting could be just a photo opportunity unless clear plans emerge to stop Israeli violence in the occupied territories. The West Bank is in a critical state. Recent evidence reveals Israel’s use of brutal methods in Gaza during its ongoing campaign. Tel Aviv must be held responsible for these actions if the BoP is to have any real impact. Recently, the Israeli cabinet approved new rules allowing settlers to buy land in the West Bank. This move violates international law. The UN rights chief said these actions will make a viable Palestinian state impossible. Yet, Israel seems set on continuing this policy. Several Muslim nations, including Pakistan, have condemned Israel’s “continued expansionist policies” in the West Bank. An investigation by Al Jazeera revealed Israel used banned thermal and thermobaric weapons in Gaza. These weapons create extreme heat and often leave no trace of their victims. Nearly 3,000 Palestinians may have been 'evaporated' by these weapons. These arms, many supplied by the US, raise shocking comparisons to horrific methods of the past. Yet, such war crimes appear part of a long disturbing history. The Muslim bloc at the upcoming BoP meeting must push for an immediate end to the illegal land grabs in the West Bank. Israel must also be held accountable for its use of illegal weapons on civilians. Since last October’s ceasefire, nearly 600 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza. These dire issues must be central to the BoP discussions. The Board should focus on ending violence, creating a roadmap for a viable Palestinian state, and confronting Israel’s actions. But with Israel also part of the BoP and Trump linked to Zionist supporters, serious confrontation seems unlikely. Without decisive moves, the Board risks becoming irrelevant.
