Supreme Court Grants Interim Bail to Shwetambari Bhatt in Film Fraud Case
February 13, 2026
The Supreme Court has granted immediate interim bail to Shwetambari V. Bhatt, wife of filmmaker Vikram Bhatt. She is involved in a fraud case filed by entrepreneur and IVF specialist turned film producer Dr. Ajay Murdia. The case was registered by the Udaipur Police in Rajasthan. Senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Dave told the court that the case was started because several films, including a biopic on Dr. Murdia, "flopped." Rohatgi said, "They came to my residence in Mumbai and picked me up… You cannot put directors in jail because the films have flopped." The Bhatt couple was arrested by Rajasthan Police from Mumbai last December. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi presided over the case. The Chief Justice criticized the couple for not seeking to quash the FIR and questioned why Rajasthan was the venue. Dr. Murdia's lawyer said the fraud involved about Rs. 44 crore and that criminal proceedings were used to recover dues. Justice Bagchi questioned if the crime was certain, to which the lawyer insisted Shwetambari Bhatt was an equal participant. The court added Dr. Murdia to the case and issued a notice to the State of Rajasthan. The next hearing is set for February 18.
