China Shouts 'No!' to US Tariffs on India, Pushes Warm Ties After Wang Yi’s Visit

August 21, 2025

NEW DELHI: Just a day after China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi wrapped up his two-day visit to India, sparks flew! China’s ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, voiced strong opposition to the United States' daring tariff moves against India. He said, “US has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on India and even threatened for more. China firmly opposes it. Silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India.” This bold statement shows Beijing’s eagerness to back New Delhi against unfair trade wars. Xu did not stop there. He highlighted the magic of India-China friendship for the region and the world. “For two neighbouring countries of such size, unity and cooperation are the only way to achieve common development. China and India’s friendship benefits Asia. We are the double engines of economic growth in Asia. India and China unity benefits the world at large. India and China have the responsibility to take the lead in promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world,” he passionately declared. Trust is the secret sauce! Xu pointed out the need for India and China to boost their trust and avoid suspicion. “Both countries are partners, not rivals. We should manage differences through dialogue,” he said. China also welcomed Indian goods, saying, “We welcome all Indian commodities to enter the Chinese market.” Talking about the often-tricky border issue, Xu said good progress was made during Wang Yi’s talks with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. They agreed on a 10-point plan, including setting up two groups: one to handle border delimitation and another for smooth border management. Xu stated, “We should not define the border issue as relationship between our two countries. The border issue is on one side, and cooperation between India and China is on the other side.” This comes after the 24th round of Special Representatives’ dialogue, led by Wang Yi and Ajit Doval on August 19, alongside Wang Yi’s talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and meeting with PM Narendra Modi. Xu shared that both sides praised progress since the last talks and the Kazan leader-level consensus. They stressed keeping peace and calm at the borders and handling issues kindly. A joint political outlook was emphasized to find a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable border settlement as per a 2005 agreement. Further exciting outcomes: two expert groups under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on the China-India border affairs (WMCC) will explore early boundary solutions and improve border management. Also, new General-Level Mechanisms will be created in eastern and middle sectors alongside the existing western one. On the trade front, both countries agreed to reopen three traditional border trading markets — Renqinggang-Changgu, Pulan-Gunji, and Jiuba-Namgya. The 25th round of Special Representatives talks is set for China in 2026. River buddies too! They discussed trans-border rivers and agreed to strengthen the China-India Expert Level Mechanism to keep rivers flowing peacefully. China also promised to share hydrological info during emergencies "based on humanitarian considerations." So, the stage is set: China showing its love for India, pushing back at the US tariffs, and working hard to settle border fears while boosting trade and water cooperation. It looks like the India-China friendship engine is revving up for a spectacular ride!
