S Jaishankar Meets Putin in Russia Amid US Tariff Pressure on India-Russian Oil Deals

August 21, 2025

New Delhi felt the heat as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar flew into Russia for a power-packed three-day visit, meeting none other than President Vladimir Putin himself! The timing couldn’t be hotter. Why? Because the United States, under President Donald Trump, slapped a sharp 25% tariff on Indian goods and, wait for it, an extra 25% on India’s crucial purchases of Russian oil — hiking total duties to a whopping 50%! Trump’s main argument? He wants India to stop buying Russian oil, blaming it for fueling the Ukraine war. But Jaishankar is not backing down. Earlier on Thursday, he sat down with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to chat all things India-Russia and get ready for the grand annual summit at the end of the year. Jaishankar warmly said, "Today's meeting gives us an occasion to discuss our political relationship as well, but also to review our bilateral ties. So, I look forward to an exchange of views on politics, on trade, on economic investment, defence, science and technology, and of course, people-to-people exchanges." He added with a nod to their history, "Our leaders met in July for the 22nd annual summit last year, and thereafter in Kazan. We now prepare for the annual summit at the end of the year, and they have always given us guidance to take forward our special and privileged strategic partnership." On the Russian side, the Foreign Ministry revealed the big ideas on the table. They aim to supercharge bilateral cooperation, especially in transport, logistics, banking, and finance. The goal? Building strong links that can resist any pressure from "unfriendly countries," and boosting the use of their own national currencies in trade. Plus, they plan to pump up cooperation in energy, agriculture, science, and technology too. In short, the India-Russia duo is cooking up a plan to deepen their ties despite global drama. Will this flavour-packed partnership sidestep US tariffs? Time will tell, but it’s clear both sides are hungry to build a strong, spicy bond for the future!
