Palestinian Cancer Patient Returns to Gaza After Two Years, Family Reunites at Rafah Crossing
February 13, 2026
The al-Najjar family reunited with Mariam al-Najjar, who returned to Gaza after being stranded in Egypt for two years. Mariam traveled to Egypt in March 2024 for cancer treatment. Due to the war and Israeli control of the Rafah crossing since May 2024, she could not return earlier.
The family waited at Khan Younis' Nasser Medical Complex, eager to see her again. Mariam's son, Mohammad al-Najjar, said, "We feel happy because we will see my mother again." He also shared the family's losses: "We lost my brother, and our homes – we lost two houses, and there’s nothing left for us."
The Rafah crossing is a vital route for medical evacuations and humanitarian aid. It partially reopened in February 2025 under a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. However, Israel restricts movement, allowing only a few patients to leave daily despite agreements for more.
As Mariam stepped off the bus, her family embraced her with tears. Mariam said, "We wouldn’t find another place like Gaza even if we searched the whole world. Even in its destruction, it is worth the whole world."
Mariam stayed at Nasser Hospital for further treatment. Her family returned to a nearby tent shelter because their home lies in a restricted zone controlled by Israeli forces. This “yellow line” divides Gaza into zones of control and limits Palestinian movement.
While the al-Najjar family is together again, many others remain separated due to border controls and paperwork. Reporter Hani Mahmoud noted, "Many families are still waiting, separated not just by distance, but by borders, paperwork, and an uncertain timeline."
