February 13, 2026
Zimbabwe shocked Australia by 23 runs on Friday in Colombo during their T20 World Cup Group B match. Zimbabwe posted 169-2 in 20 overs, thanks to Brian Bennett’s classy 64 not out. In response, Australia started well but quickly lost wickets. Zimbabwe bowlers Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans tore through Australia’s top order, reducing them to 29-4. Australia were all out for 146 in 19.3 overs.
The 11th-ranked Zimbabweans controlled the match against second-ranked Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium. Muzarabani was the star with figures of 4-17 and was named player of the match. He said, "I was really happy that today really came off. I also believe that everyone really bowled well. We missed Richi (Ngarava), but Brad (Evans) really bowled well."
Brian Bennett praised the fans, saying, "There are fans who have come all the way from Zimbabwe and they have enjoyed the game and it is a special feeling today to get a win here."
Australia tried to fight back with Glenn Maxwell and Matt Renshaw adding 77 runs for the fifth wicket. But after Maxwell was dismissed for 31 by part-time spinner Ryan Burl, Australia lost quick wickets and fell short of the target.
Bennett’s unbeaten 64 off 56 balls included seven boundaries and was a patient innings on a tricky pitch. It was his 10th T20 international half-century. Zimbabwe now have two wins from two and face Ireland and Sri Lanka next. Bennett said, "We are in a good position to go to the next round having won two out of two."
Australia missed key players like captain Mitchell Marsh and star pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. Marcus Stoinis also got injured but batted briefly. Renshaw top scored with 65.
Renshaw admitted the team struggled, "We weren’t good enough today. There is time for flair in T20 cricket. We had to rebuild, but we kept losing wickets at regular intervals. It wasn’t our day and we are bitterly disappointed."
Zimbabwe’s strong start and youthful energy made this win the biggest surprise in the tournament so far.
