Dozens of diners packed the 80-year-old Honolulu Coffee Shop in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai to enjoy its famous egg tarts and milk tea before it closes next month. The restaurant was busy during lunch on Friday with long queues outside along Hennessy Road. Honolulu Coffee Shop announced on Thursday it would shut its Wan Chai branch on March 1 “after careful consideration.” Many older customers expressed sadness. A man named Leung, in his sixties, said, "It was a pity that the restaurant would be gone, as he had been eating there ever since he was young." The closure is part of a trend of restaurant shutdowns in recent years due to changing consumer habits and more people traveling across the border for leisure. The restaurant’s grey-and-yellow exterior and the smell of freshly baked egg tarts made it a local favorite for decades.
