The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau has issued a warning about a rise in online frauds tied to Valentine’s Day. Criminals are using the occasion to trick people with fake gift links, flower delivery scams, discount coupons, and romantic messages on WhatsApp, SMS, social media, dating apps, and email. Many fraudsters create fake profiles on matrimonial sites, posing as NRIs or professionals. They build trust and promise marriage, then ask for money citing emergencies or travel costs. In January 2026, 39 such cases caused losses of ₹70.9 lakh. In 2025, 384 cases led to over ₹12.65 crore in losses. A highlighted case involved a 29-year-old IT professional from Hyderabad who lost ₹46 lakh after investing in a fake trading platform promoted by a scammer pretending to work abroad. Sextortion is also growing, with offenders recording or faking intimate videos and demanding money. In 2025, 1,231 sextortion cases caused losses above ₹3.2 crore; January 2026 saw 88 cases. One retired Hyderabad man paid ₹1.6 lakh but faced continued extortion. Cyber stalking and harassment are increasing too. In 2025, 3,113 such cases led to ₹1.93 crore losses; January 2026 had 359 cases. A woman was harassed online until police intervened. The bureau warns of fake gift links, QR and UPI scams, fraudulent hotel bookings, and impersonation demanding customs fees. Citizens should verify identities, never send money for investments or fees online, and avoid sharing personal content. Use two-factor authentication and be cautious of pressure tactics. If victimized, keep evidence and report to the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or local police. Parents should talk to children about online safety. The advisory aims to protect the public during festive times.
