Shashidhar Kosambe, chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for the Protection of Children’s Rights, inspected the Special Police Unit for Children in Belagavi on Friday. He ordered officers to put up an information board showing contact details of officers and the children’s helpline number 1098 at a prominent spot. Kosambe told the police to regularly check and manage records related to children’s cases. He stressed that all child-related cases, including abduction, POCSO, and child marriage, must be reported without delay to authorities including the commission. During a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Mr. Kosambe said officers must prioritize protecting children’s rights above procedural formalities. He said all departments should work together and start investigations immediately when cases come in. "It is mandatory for any person, parent, or school staff who has information about sexual abuse against children to report it to the police station. It is mandatory to register a POCSO case, and if there is any delay, action can be taken against those responsible. The POCSO cases should be charge-sheeted in 120 days," he declared. Kosambe asked Additional DC Vijay Kumar H. to issue notices to officers delaying five POCSO cases. He also voiced concern over slow investigations into missing children and child deaths in road accidents. He directed schools and hostels to ensure safe environments for children by preventing violence, abuse, and exploitation. A child rights protection committee must be formed in every school and hostel, with complaint boxes installed and checked regularly. Privacy for abused children must be maintained. Awareness campaigns against child trafficking, labour, and marriage should be run. Finally, Kosambe urged officers to work hard to reduce maternal mortality, infant deaths, and malnutrition in the district.
