Traffic jams in north Bengaluru have shifted from Hebbal flyover to Mehkri Circle. A new congestion point has appeared near the HMT Bhavan bus stop on Ballari Road. It now takes about three minutes to cover a stretch that usually took less than one minute. Traffic from Binny Mill and Tarabalu Roads adds to the chaos, causing six to 10 minutes delays over 900 meters. The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) say the problem started after the new Hebbal flyover loop helped vehicles move faster, pushing traffic bottlenecks to Mehkri Circle. A senior police officer said, "At Mehkri Circle, vehicles turning towards C.V. Raman Road or Jayamahal Road face a bottleneck because the road is narrow. However, the congestion begins even before HMT Bhavan due to reduced road width and the unscientific placement of the bus shelter." Ballari Road narrows by about 10 feet just before HMT Bhavan. The bus shelter sits after this narrow section, forcing buses to stop briefly and block part of the road. The officer said, "Technically, the bottleneck starts at the HMT Bhavan bus shelter." The BTP surveyed the area with the Transport Department and found a new place 100 meters behind the current stop, where the road is wider. They have written twice in the last five months to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) asking to move the bus stop. But GBA has not acted yet. GBA officials said they are planning to relocate over 100 bus shelters citywide. The BTP had earlier listed 103 bus stops causing traffic problems. On February 11, GBA Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao told officials to start moving these shelters soon.
