Trump Sends USS Gerald R Ford to Middle East to Pressure Iran Over Nuclear Talks
February 14, 2026
US President Donald Trump has ordered the USS Gerald R Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, to sail from the Caribbean Sea to the Middle East. This move aims to increase pressure on Iran during ongoing talks about its nuclear and missile programs. The carrier and its support ships will take about three weeks to reach the region. There, they will join the USS Abraham Lincoln, raising US naval strength significantly. Trump also said in an Axios interview that he was “thinking” of sending a second carrier strike group if needed. Last week, the US and Iran held indirect talks in Oman to try to reach a nuclear deal. However, no future meeting date has been set yet. Trump met Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, discussing these talks. Iran showed willingness to limit its nuclear enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief but rejected other demands. Israel insists Iran also cut back its ballistic missile program and support for proxy groups like Hezbollah. Trump’s stance on Iran changed over the past month—from hints of intervention to focusing on nuclear limits after the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln. The Gerald R Ford had been in the Caribbean, supporting US actions there and had no clear return date when sent to the Middle East. Trump warned Iran that failing to reach a deal would be “very traumatic” and hoped progress would happen “over the next month.” He stated, “It should happen quickly. They should agree very quickly.”
