West Bengal is preparing to remove about six lakh more names from its voter list. The special intensive revision (SIR) hearings are ending on February 14. In the first phase, 58 lakh names were already cut from the list. The total number of electors now stands at 7.08 crore. Officials at the Chief Electoral Officer’s office said 6.25 lakh voters missed their SIR hearings. The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued notices for ‘logical discrepancies’ to 1.36 crore voters. Details of 1.23 crore have been verified so far. Some details are still waiting to be uploaded. West Bengal Chief Secretary Nandani Chakravarty met ECI officials in Delhi recently. This followed reports that the state government did not act on several ECI orders. These orders included filing FIRs against four officials and suspending one official linked to the SIR process. Six months ago, a similar meeting took place when Manoj Pant was Chief Secretary. The government had then refused to act against certain officials. On the same day, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar met the West Bengal CEO’s office staff and District Magistrates (DMs), who also serve as District Electoral Officers. The CEC expressed anger at about six DMs. He questioned how rejected documents were uploaded and why DMs did not supervise the process properly. The DMs of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Purba Medinipur were specifically warned. The CEC ordered that only valid voters remain on the electoral roll, and no foreigners be included. The final voter list for West Bengal is expected to be released by February 28. Assembly elections in the state are due in the coming months.
