The Trump administration sued Harvard University on Friday. The government accuses Harvard of not cooperating in a federal probe. Officials want to see if Harvard illegally used race in its admissions process. This lawsuit follows President Trump's earlier threats to get $1 billion from Harvard over school policies. Harvard has not yet responded to these claims. The administration has also threatened to cut federal funds from Harvard and other universities because of various issues. These include protests supporting Palestine, campus diversity programs, and transgender policies. The Justice Department said Harvard has "repeatedly slow-walked the pace of production and refused to produce pertinent data and documents." These documents include admissions policies and messages about banned diversity programs. The lawsuit was filed in Boston federal court. It aims to help check if Harvard follows a 2023 Supreme Court ruling. This ruling said race-conscious admissions programs are unconstitutional. The Justice Department said it sued "solely to compel Harvard to produce documents relating to any consideration of race in admission." It also said the lawsuit "does not accuse Harvard of any discriminatory conduct, nor does it seek monetary damages or the revocation of federal funding." Last year, the administration tried to cancel many grants for Harvard researchers, citing failures to address harassment of Jewish students. Harvard had sued in response. So far, attempts to freeze federal funds at Harvard have faced legal challenges and no deal has been reached.
