The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced on Friday, February 13, 2026, that it is confident of winning three out of four Rajya Sabha seats from Odisha next month. The current tenure of four Rajya Sabha members from Odisha ends on April 2. The party currently holds 79 MLAs in the 147-member Odisha Legislative Assembly, while the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has 50, Congress 14, CPI(M) one, and three independents. BJP has the support of all three independents. A candidate requires 31 first-preference votes to win a Rajya Sabha seat. Given the numbers, BJP and BJD can comfortably ensure election of two and one candidates respectively. Vijay Singh Tomar, BJP's Odisha in-charge, told reporters, "we are confident of sending three Rajya Sabha members from Odisha. Party’s Parliamentary Committee will take a call as to who would be their candidates." Currently, Odisha has 10 Rajya Sabha MPs: seven from BJD and three from BJP. The tenures of BJD MPs Niranjan Bishi and Muzibulla Khan and BJP MPs Mamata Mohanta and Sujeet Kumar expire on April 2. Meanwhile, Odisha Pradesh Congress President Bhakta Charan Das plans to meet BJD Chief Naveen Patnaik to discuss jointly nominating a distinguished candidate for Rajya Sabha.
