A mother from Zhejiang, China, Zhang Liping, has gone viral with her unusual breakfast creations for her 16-year-old son. After facing criticism online for serving simple breakfasts like dry bread and rice crackers, Zhang got creative. She started making strange breakfast combos such as candied fruit with sour fish soup, barbecue with coffee, and even durian with beef hotpot. These quirky meals, known as "thunder breakfasts," have amused millions. Her videos have gathered more than 900 million views and nearly 1.3 million followers on social media.
Zhang said her son eats breakfast at 6 am, so she wakes up at 5 am to prepare the meals before work. "My son has never liked traditional breakfasts like dumplings or noodles. He only loves meat and sweets," she said. Encouraged by netizens, Zhang’s creativity soared, and the unique breakfasts caught the internet’s attention.
One viewer joked, “You can never guess what Liping’s next breakfast will be. Maybe stinky tofu with tiramisu?” Another wrote, “Liping’s thunder breakfasts are filled with a mother’s clumsy yet endearing love.” Zhang said what touched her most was the praise for her happy family bond.
Her son even ranked his favourite breakfasts, with durian and hotpot leading the list. Zhang plans to keep experimenting with quirky dishes, saying, “The online fame will eventually fade, but a mother’s love behind the thunder breakfasts will never fade.” She is now seen as part of China’s “abstract parents,” known for creative and unusual parenting styles.
